James Murphy

James Murphy

James Murphy. The man, the myth, the legend. He was also much more than that. Jim was a New York Irishman, Navy veteran, NYC police officer, a husband, a father, a grandfather, a great grandfather and the undeniable center of a family that continues to grow his image.

But above all else, he was a man who lived fully, spoke his mind, and brought energy into every room he walked into, and even walked out of. The room decided his energy. He could get a conversation… or an argument started just as fast as he could remove his dentures that weren't quite glued in right.

He served his country with honor in the United States Navy, then went on to serve his community as a police officer in Coney Island. Those years shaped his toughness, his discipline, and his no-nonsense attitude.

He had a personality that couldn't be replicated. Quick-witted, sharp, and always ready to stir the pot. If you knew him, you knew exactly what that meant. And if you didn't -- well, this outing gives you a pretty good idea.

The James Murphy Classic isn't just a golf outing. The guy never picked up a pair of clubs, unless it was at the Brooklyn Golf Center miniature golf course. It's a moment in time, every year that we get together and reflect on who he was while bringing new memories to his "legacy". The laughter, the arguments, the competition, the storytelling, the occasional bending of the rules -- it all traces back to him.

Today, his legacy lives on through his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren - a family that continues to grow, evolve, and stay connected through traditions like this one.

Every swing, every bet, every joke told on the course is a reminder:

He's still very much a part of it.
